Dear Dodgeland Families,
Our school meal program, as you are well aware of, still must meet the tough federal nutrition standards when school begins again this year. These standards ensure that meals are healthy and well-balanced, and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.
As in the past, school meals will continue to offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat, sodium and portion size. This change started with the 2012-2013 school year, school lunches also need to meet additional standards requiring:
- Age-appropriate calorie limits
-
Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (Students must take at least one-half cup of fruit or vegetables before they exit the serving line.)
-
A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
-
Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
-
More whole grains
-
Less sodium
Federal meal pattern requirements can be found in the Meal Pattern Requirements document.
We will publish our menus on our website on a monthly basis. We encourage you to look at the menus and show them to your students(s). We know that some of these foods may be new to them, but we view the school’s Commons as a great place to learn. Here they usually don’t learn math, science or reading – they learn to eat healthy foods! We will have a variety of ways to let our students know what is new and different in the food service lines.
Dodgeland Food Service Department programs continue to be of great value and a huge convenience for busy families. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch! We look forward to seeing your children this fall in our lunch lines. Thank you!

Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program
We are happy to announce that Dodgeland Elementary was selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) during the 2023-24 school year.
The goals of this grant program are to:
- Create healthier school environments by offering healthier choices.
- Expand the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience.
- Increase children’s fruit and vegetable consumption.
- Make a difference in children’s diets to impact their current and future health.
A fresh fruit or vegetable snack will be offered to Elementary School students approximately 2 times per week. FFVP snacks will generally be served during milk and snack breaks.
Teachers will provide nutrition education activities in the classroom to increase students’ knowledge of the health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. The FFVP is an excellent way to supplement other wellness programs in the school that promote health, nutrition, and physical activity.
You can support your student’s efforts to increase his or her fruit and vegetable consumption in many ways. For example:
- Take your student grocery shopping. Let your student assist in selecting a new fruit or veggie to try.
- Give your student options! Let your student choose which veggie to serve at dinner some nights.
- Keep fruits and vegetables where your student can see them, such as on the counter.
- Take your student to a local farmers’ market and discover which fruits and vegetables are in season.
- Be a role model! If your child sees you eating fruits and veggies regularly, he or she will be more likely to eat them.
More information about the FFVP can be found at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program website.
