Athletics

The Dodgeland School District offers a comprehensive and competitive athletic program for both middle and high school students. We are blessed to have dedicated student-athletes, great coaches, supportive parents, and a motivated booster club working collectively toward providing excellent experiences for our student-athletes. We hold our student-athletes to high standards and expect that through these opportunities they find a deeper connection to their school and a sincere purpose as contributors and representatives for our entire Dodgeland community. All Dodgeland Athletic offerings can be found on the Fall Athletics, Winter Athletics, and Spring Athletics web pages.

For any questions regarding our offerings and opportunities in athletics at Dodgeland, please contact Mrs. Marcia K. Modaff, Athletic & Activities Director, by email or by phone at (920) 386-4404 ext. 1033.

Activities

There are a variety of different clubs and activities at Dodgeland Middle and High School for our student population to become involved with and participate. Some of these clubs and activities are co-curricular and have a direct connection to a class offered at school, but most are open to any student who is interested. All Dodgeland Activity offerings can be found on the Arts and Co-Curricular web pages.

Activities such as Mock Trial, Visual Arts Classic, Forensics, FBLA, Skills USA, etc. have competitions against other schools, while others, like the musical, plays, band, choir, etc. are performance-based.  Other clubs and activities such as German Club, Spanish Club, Art Club, etc. are designed to bring students with similar interests and focuses together as a group.

Many different community service projects are done each year by our Dodgeland activity organizations. If a student is interested in joining a club or activity, they should contact the adviser at any time and check out the daily announcements in Schoology for specific information on each group.

Sportsmanship

The athletes, coaches, parents, and fans are eager to attend events and support their Dodgeland Trojans. The Dodgeland Athletic /  Activities Department is asking for everyone’s assistance in providing positive sportsmanship at our events. The involvement of our students in athletics and activities contributes to the development of their value system. Trustworthiness, citizenship, caring, fairness, and respect are lifetime values that are taught through educationally-based activities and are fundamental principles of good character. With these principles, the spirit of competition thrives, fueled by honest rivalry, courteous relations, and grateful acceptance of the results.

Dodgeland Middle School, Dodgeland High School, the Trailways Conference, and the WIAA (Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association) have made a commitment to promote good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches, and spectators at all athletic events. Profanity, degrading remarks, and intimidating actions directed at officials or competitors will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from the event site. The score from any contest is generally forgotten over time, but the actions of players, coaches, and spectators are remembered for years. Every time you attend a Dodgeland school event, please remember to demonstrate a winning attitude and support our student-athletes, coaches, game officials, and event workers.

GO TROJANS!

Are There Benefits To Participating In Athletics?

The Dodgeland School District provides a variety of athletic programs to help our students develop academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. There are multiple benefits of athletic participation by students during their middle school and high school careers.

  1. Physical Health & Wellness  - Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that students who participate in school sports are less likely to engage in activities that could have a negative impact on their health, such as smoking and drinking. Furthermore, they found that sports participation reduces the chance of obesity or type 2 diabetes, which is generally associated with a lack of physical activity.

In addition to physical health, sports participation also promotes positive mental wellness. The stresses of performing well both academically and socially can be a heavy burden for students. However, by participating in sports, students not only gain an outlet to relieve that stress, but also to improve their mental health overall. In-depth information about stress management through exercise can be found on the Mayo Clinic web page.

  2. Leadership & Teamwork Skills - Teamwork, inclusion, and equality are all major benefits of participating in school sports. Sports cultivate valuable life skills, such as empathy. As students experience what it is like to work as a team toward a common goal, they develop a better understanding and appreciation for their peers. The teamwork and leadership skills that students learn on the field/court often carry over to the classroom and beyond, creating a more positive culture as a whole.

  3. Mentorship - Mentors help to facilitate personal and professional growth, and in a school sports setting, coaches are the ultimate mentors for players. This means they play an integral role in guiding students toward achieving their goals and reaching their highest potential. Coach-to-athlete relationships create a ‘bigger picture’ perspective for students. At their core, these relationships convey that personal growth for student athletes involves more than just the sport they’re playing, but rather how they develop as a person in our school and within their community.

  4. Time Management  - Participation in school sports teaches students the importance of properly managing their time. Whether it’s a test scheduled around a big game, or completing homework or studying before or after practice, student athletes learn to balance busy schedules on a consistent basis.

Like many of the other benefits of participating in school athletics, learning proper time management has a profound impact on students well beyond high school. Finding that balance while they’re in middle and high school is so beneficial for their life after and beyond high school.

  5.  Improved Academics - Several studies have linked positive academic results from students participating in school athletics. One example comes from the National Federation of State High School Associations. Their research revealed that sports team participation was independently associated with a higher GPA for high school girls and boys.

  6. Accountability & Responsibility - School based athletics are beneficial because they teach students to be responsible. The daily requirements of a sport, such as showing up to practice prepared and on time may seem small, but they add up to build accountability within every player.

Participation in sports also positively influences kids to hold both themselves and their teammates accountable. This, in turn, teaches the value of collaboration and coordination to grow and learn from mistakes.

Beyond just the physical aspect of practice, coaches and teams consistently work on building character, staying positive, and communicating effectively to grow as individuals and as a group.
